Interview: Derwin Daniels

Can you tell us about your latest project? What inspired it, and what can your fans expect from it?

JEG Multimedia Group is releasing the single « Brighter Than This » that was produced by Grammy Award Winner, Felton Pilate. The song has an upbeat major vibe that sends the listener to a brighter place.

What emotions or messages do you hope your music conveys to listeners?

I’d like to think that listeners will experience joy when listening to the song « Brighter Than This. » The chorus is well defined and is memorable.

How has your musical style evolved over the years, and what do you hope to convey through your music now compared to when you first started your career?

Growing up I listened to and played top 40 funk music. I moved into more dinner jazz gigs on drums with my dad. That later turned to the stylings of Grover Washington Jr, George Benson and other icons that crossed lines into other formats. I would consider myself influenced by all of those styles in my music.

Many fans look up to their favorite artists as role models. What advice do you have for aspiring musicians who hope to make a name for themselves in the music industry?

Stay true to yourself. Make sure that you listen and learn from others. Your voice will come through and build from there.

In the age of streaming and digital platforms, how do you navigate the challenges of making a living as a recording artist, and what advice would you give to aspiring musicians trying to break into the industry?

In today’s world for me to make a living is to perform. We used to perform to promote our recordings, now recordings are for promoting live performances.

Your image and style often become part of your brand as an artist. How do you approach your personal image and fashion choices to express yourself and connect with your fans?

Show up as yourself! Wearing black is always good with a splash of color! HaHa!

The future is always uncertain, but what are your long-term goals and aspirations as a recording artist, and what can your fans expect from you in the coming years?

My mission is and has been for a long time is for music to take me around the world. I’d like to perform and jam with others all over the world. Be on the lookout for « Brighter Than This » and the future will bring more musical ideas that I’d like to share with the world.
